Description
ORDER! : The Spatial Ideologies of Carbon ModernityA symposium at The Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture of The Cooper Union, New York
April 1, 2023
Rose Auditorium
With the adoption of fossil fuels and the onset of the industrial revolution, a new spatial order emerged that is energy intensive, and inscribed into the social and economic structures of an extractive society by architecture and cities. To address climate change, this spatial paradigm must be confronted, and alternatives must be proposed. What models may contain the seeds of a counter-project? I argue that Rossi’s analogical city contains the seeds of a counter-project. It is foremost a conceptual model; concepts are needed to structure actions, thought is materialised in the city. The analogical city offers one model as counter-point. It emphasises critical and discursive perspectives, a combinatory approach, and an ethos of collectivity – modes of thinking and practice that counter the dominant instrumental and consumer paradigm of carbon modernity.
Elisa Iturbe will deliver the opening remarks followed by presentations and discussions including Kathi Weeks, Esra Akcan, Cameron McEwan, Ross Exo Adams, Matthew Soules, Ana María Durán, Catherine Ingraham, Gary Fields, and David Wengrow.
