Creating site performance with Newcastle Cathedral: responsibility and inclusion in an experiential learning process

Activity: Talk or presentationOral presentation

Description

In this Pecha Kucha, staff and students evaluate achievements and challenges of an experiential learning process reflecting on how ethical responsibility (a Module Learning Outcome) and questions of inclusion have been negotiated. In 2024 and 2025, first year BA(Hons) Theatre & Performance students in TP4003 Performance Explorations have created work for performance at Newcastle Cathedral influenced by their experience of the cathedral and the people and stories they encounter there. Students explore creative methods and engage in a devised theatre process of ensemble performance-making (co-creation) guided by Joe Hufton, Artistic Director of theatre company November Club, and module tutor Liz Pavey. The group meet and talk with cathedral staff, volunteers, and participants of ‘Lantern Initiative’ activities such as Recovery Church, a space where people seeking recovery from addiction can be in community. Following the public performance, student share their learning through a viva assessment.
