Description
Presentation entitled, ‘(Early) Lessons Learned: Degree Apprenticeships in Architecture' at Innovation in Built Environment Education (iBEE) Conference, Liverpool John Moores University, 04-05 April 2023. The conference acted as the UK’s Learning and Teaching in Built Environment stream within the 59th Annual Associated Schools of Construction (ASC) International Conference.Since the last iBEE Conference (2019), the first cohorts of Architect (Level 7) degree apprentices have qualified. This milestone permitted an opportunity to review apprentice’s experiences across the country, coupled with those of mentors and academics to identify early lessons learned.
The presentation shared findings from a recent series of surveys that invited Architect (Level 7) apprentices, employers, and training providers to share their experiences and views on architecture apprenticeships, discussing outline successes and unexpected challenges of this route to the profession. Specific data from the surveys was presented and discussed, with the intention to learn from the feedback and to develop a community that can better support apprentices on their journeys.
Further to this study, many of these lessons are being collated into an architecture apprenticeship handbook at Level 7 to demystify this route into the profession and empower apprentices to manage and monitor their expectations and learning.
