Abstract
Learning from the Periphery reflects on my ongoing teaching and research on urban peripheries and the Anthropocene. It draws together several interrelated strands of my work including my teaching and research initiative The Periphery as a Critical Project, and an editorial project Peripheries–Peripherocene for The Journal of Architecture. One aim of these projects is a response to the climate crisis, understood as both a spatial crisis and a crisis of imagination. The talk will reflect on outcomes from student-led exhibitions, key themes from collaborative projects, and on the possibility of design research as a critical practice. Together, these projects articulate a framework for connecting theory, research, and design teaching, under the pressures of the Anthropocene.
