Navigating the Discourse: How Digital Civics Positions Itself

Activity: Talk or presentationInvited talk

Description

This seminar, delivered at the DCitizens Summer School in July 2025, explored how Digital Civics positions itself within global research and practice. Drawing on a programme of curated seminars and workshops, the work analysed international contributions and identified three key orientations through which people situate their projects and motivations.

While some practitioners align primarily with one orientation, others operate across two or more, resulting in overlaps that together shape the discourse of Digital Civics. Using anonymised case studies derived from the seminar material, the session reflected on relationship building, justice, and research as infrastructure as central themes.

Rather than offering step-by-step accounts of individual projects, the seminar encouraged a critical conversation about how orientations guide research practices and civic engagement, and what this means for the evolving field of Digital Civics.
