This session will discuss recent research by Kotsoglou and Oswald, conducted from a legal perspective and based in part on freedom of information requests, highlighting a concerning trend to regard the polygraph as a means of determining whether a suspect is telling the truth, thus producing a dangerous false sense of security due to the polygraph's invalidity. Furthermore, the lack of transparency, consistency and governance around polygraph use raises considerable issues in relation to public standards and individual rights.
