Description
Empowering Voices is a NortHFutures, EPSRC- funded 12-month project. We are working collaboratively with a charity partner and the local community in Gateshead to develop storytelling through creative art and digital methods with older people who live with multiple long-term conditions and hidden disability.A team of artists, storytellers, animators and digital creators have been working with us to run creative workshops with a group of residents at Mulgrave Villas supported housing in Gateshead. Together with the residents, over a series of weekly workshops, we have all been immersed in talking about their lives and their lived experience, hearing their stories, and supporting them to tell these stories, through producing textile art, spoken audio conversations and recordings, avatars and content for the charity website. In addition to qualitative exploration of the residents' stories, we are conducting an ongoing process evaluation involving all stakeholders - including the residents, facilitators, charity and researchers.
One of our project outputs is a public exhibition of the residents' creative art and their stories which will be available to view at Gateshead Civic Centre between November 2025 and January 2026. The exhibition is called, Silent Voices: Our Hidden Stories. This title and the exhibition content were developed by the residents. The Silent Voices exhibition represents output from the Empowering Voices project and, importantly, a route by which the participants can share their stories - to use their voice and explore how it feels to do so.
