Description of impact

As part of the Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust Patient Cancer Series podcasts, we discuss a Northumbria University sponsored chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy study to see whether it is feasible to measure symptoms of peripheral nerve damage (peripheral neuropathy) at various time points during chemotherapy and whether exercise could help to reduce the risk. We also discuss the importance of physical activity and exercise during cancer survivorship.

Today’s podcast discusses the chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy study to see whether it is feasible to measure symptoms of peripheral nerve damage (peripheral neuropathy) at various time points during chemotherapy and whether could exercise help to reduce the risk. The team also wants to see how and when symptoms of peripheral neuropathy develop during chemotherapy. The research team have recruited women who have been diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer and are scheduled to receive a particular type of chemotherapy (known as taxanes). The information collected during this research could also help detect and possibly prevent breast cancer patients from developing peripheral neuropathy in the future.
