Lighting and productivity research cited in Estonian national handbook for occupational health physicians (2022)

Impact: Public policy, law and services, Health and welfare

Description of impact

The 2016 review of occupant productivity and office indoor environment quality (Al Horr, Arif, Kaushik and colleagues, 2016) synthesised the evidence on natural and artificial light and worker performance. The 2022 "Handbook for occupational health physicians" was commissioned by the Estonian Ministry of Social Affairs and written by the Estonian Society of Occupational Health Physicians as recommended guidance for the health surveillance of the working population. The handbook cites the review in its section on lighting for the finding that productivity is higher in naturally lit rooms, and again in its summary of how light affects alertness and circadian rhythm. The guidance is hosted by the Labour Inspectorate and the national health information system.
