Occupant comfort research cited in the World Bank RIGHT+ framework for school buildings (2025)

Impact: Public policy, law and services, International development

Description of impact

The 2016 review of indoor environmental quality and occupant well-being (Al Horr, Arif, Katafygiotou, Mazroei, Kaushik and Elsarrag, 2016) identified the tensions that arise between energy-saving design and the air quality and comfort of occupants. The World Bank's 2025 Approach Note "RIGHT+ Framework for Physical Learning Environments", produced by its Education Global Practice with GFDRR, WHO and UNESCO, guides the design of resilient, inclusive, green and healthy school buildings in Bank-financed education projects. The framework cites the review where it advises that conflicts between green design and occupant comfort must be addressed carefully in school design. The note is the Bank's operational guidance for education infrastructure investment worldwide.
