Occupant productivity research cited in Canadian national guidelines for laboratory animal facilities (Jul 2024)

Impact: Public policy, law and services, Health and welfare

Description of impact

The 2016 review of occupant productivity and office indoor environment quality (Al Horr, Arif, Kaushik and colleagues, 2016) synthesised the evidence linking lighting and other indoor factors to the performance of building occupants. In July 2024 the Canadian Council on Animal Care published its guidelines "Laboratory animal facilities", replacing the 2003 edition. The Council sets the standards that Canadian research institutions must meet to hold the certificate required for federal research funding. Section 8.2.3 on spectral quality of lighting cites the review for the statement that lighting affects the work performance of personnel, extending the guidelines from animal welfare to the people who work in these facilities, in a document published in English and French.
