Andrea is Programme Leader for Sport Development in the department of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation
Andrea completed her PhD at Loughborough University in 2010 which examined the professionalisation, formalisation and bureaucratisation of sport and exercise medicine in British Olympic sports.
Following the completion of her PhD, Andrea undertook lectureships at Nottingham Trent University and Chichester University before joining Northumbria in 2016
As a sociologist of sport, Andrea's main teaching interests relate to sport and social inequalities as well as the application of social theory to sporting topics and research methodologies. Her teaching practice encourages students to be enthusiastic in their advocacy of sport at the same time as understanding the implications of political, social and cultural structures to its organisation
Andrea's research interests are broadly focused on athlete healthcare in sport. She has published mixed method work on the organisation and professionalisation of sport and exercise medicine, practitioner boundaries in multidisciplinary medical teams and the contextual foctors that both enable and constrain healthcare professionals' management of illness and injury
