Biography

About

Andy completed a BA (Hons) in Secondary: Physical Education with QTS, followed by an MA in Exercise and Sports Coaching at Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU). Alongside his teaching and coaching responsibilities, he decided to continue with his studies and in 2014, completed his Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice, which as a result, earned him Fellow within the Higher Education Academy (FHEA). 

Prior to Andy’s appointment here at Northumbria, he was the area lead in Exercise and Sports Coaching at MMU, covering many units on their Exercise and Sport Coaching programme. For six years, he had been involved in the development and delivery of all coaching related modules ranging from levels 3-7. Alongside Andy’s teaching commitments at MMU, he had huge amounts of success in all BUCS competitions as the head coach for their Men’s Footballing side, working with players over a nine year period. Over those nine seasons, the team achieved five league titles and were winners in three National finals.  

His primary responsibilities here at Northumbria, include teaching on the BSc programme in Sport Coaching, with further teaching interests lying predominantly within coach education, coaching behaviours, sports pedagogy and current issues surrounding sport and physical activity within secondary education. He is particularly interested in the areas concerned with the modernisation and development of physical education through high quality delivery and assessment for learning. Andy contributes to teaching at all undergraduate levels delivering lecturers, seminars, workshops and CPD events across a wide range of sport coaching modules.

In addition to his work at MMU and NU, Andy has been heavily involved working within high performance environments, coaching at two of the leading Premier League football academies. His roles consisted of coaching young elite footballers at academy level, nurturing the best young talent in Manchester, Stoke-on-Trent and the surrounding areas, while also recruiting the best young players. Andy has also been involved with the Coach Education programme at Bolton Wanderers FC. His role at the club involved the education of player/coach development, providing opportunities for players to reach their potential through performing and coaching. Andy is a UEFA A licensed coach and will be beginning his UEFA Pro licence in 2017.
