Biography

Ayesha Fuentes joined Northumbria University as Stride Lecturer in Arts Conservation in 2020. Originally from  Washington State, USA, she has a BA in art and religion from Williams College (2003), a MA in history of art from Tufts University (2011) and a MA from the University of California Los Angeles and Getty Conservation Institute program in the conservation of archaeological and ethnographic materials (2014). She earned her doctorate in 2021 from SOAS University of London with her dissertation "On the use of human remains in Tibetan ritual objects".

Ayesha has worked with sites and collections in the US, UK, China, Sri Lanka, Cambodia, Bhutan and Sudan and has been an active member in professional communities like the International Council of Museums Committee for Conservation (ICOM-CC), Association for Critical Heritage Studies and American Institute for Conservation (AIC) where she is particularly concerned with ethics and training. Her research and professional experience is focused on the treatment and handling of Buddhist material culture and Asian ritual technologies, as well as the promotion of a sustainable, inclusive model of conservation centered on knowledge exchange and accessibility.

At Northumbria she is involved with the International Centre for the History and Culture of Nanzhao and Dali Kingdoms and a member of the Visual and Material Cultures research group.
