Barry Hill is the ‘Director of Education (Employability)’ within the department of Nursing, Midwifery and Health at Northumbria University. He is also Programme Leader for B.Sc. (Hons) Adult Nursing. Barry is the ‘Commissioning and Clinical Series Editor’ for the Advanced Clinical Practice and Clinical Skills (at a glance) series at the British Journal of Nursing (BJN); is an editorial board member, and sits on the Healthcare Inform Editorial Advisory Board. Barry was on the regional board for the British Association of Critical Care Nursing (BACCN) for a couple of years. He has also been an External Examiner at Hull University and Teesside University for MSc critical care and Advanced Clinical Practice programmes, and is currently an Associate Lecturer for ACP, Independent Prescribing, and Critical Care at the University of West London (UWL).
Barry directs on all aspects of employability for the department of nursing, midwifery, and health. Besides his strategic and operational portfolio of responsibilities, he leads and teaches on a range of Higher Education (HE) programmes and courses, including undergraduate and postgraduate critical care, respiratory care, advanced critical care practice, and Nursing programmes.
Barrys clinical expertise was gained at Imperial College NHS Trust across all Adult intensive care units including Neuro-Trauma, cardiac and general critical care. Prior to joining Higher Education, Barry was a band 8 Matron within the surgical POEM division for Plastics Orthopaedics ENT and Major Trauma, managing and leading the ENT, Airway, Head and Neck and Plastics including breast surgery. He was a band 7 Senior Charge Nurse in Adult ICU prior to this. Besides being qualified in critical care and neuro critical care (LSBU), he holds a BSc (Hons) Intensive Care Nursing, and an MSc Advanced Nurse Practitioner from the University of West London (UWL). He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA), a registered Teacher (TCH), and an Independent Prescriber (V300) with the NMC.
Barry’s research themes and scholarly interests include clinical education, critical care, advanced clinical practice, and respiratory & neurological nursing. Barry is a strong education professional, practices academia (education, research, and leadership) at all levels within HE. He has published and is currently editing several books. He has written 36 book chapters, and over 100 academic peer review journal articles, including 4 REF papers. He is currently studying a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) at Northumbria Uni.
