Barry Hill

I am a Professor of Nursing and Critical Care Practice, with a background in acute and critical care, advanced practice, and healthcare education. I hold a BSc (Hons) in Intensive Care Nursing, an MSc in Advanced Practice, and a PhD. I am a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA), a Registered Nurse (Adult), an Independent and Supplementary Prescriber (V300), and a Registered Teacher with the NMC.

With over 25 years of experience, I have held senior roles in clinical, academic, and consultancy settings, including Head of School, Director of Employability, and Professor at two higher education institutions. I have led, and continue to lead, curriculum development, academic innovation, and external engagement in critical care and advanced practice education. I have managed multi campus academic operations, chaired assessment boards, supported programme validation and fitness to practise panels, and led initiatives to enhance the student experience and staff development.

My work includes designing internal and pre master’s internships. I have co developed programmes with NHS trusts and with private, independent, and voluntary organisations. I have managed substantial budgets, delivered sustained surpluses, and secured significant research, CPD, and consultancy income. Internationally, I am recognised through my consultancy work and published outputs. I have worked with the Government of Gibraltar and the Gibraltar Health Authority to deliver postgraduate education and COVID 19 training. Several of my books have been translated into other languages and are used globally in advanced practice education.

I actively contribute to academic citizenship. I am a Consultant Editor for the International Journal for Advancing Practice, Clinical Editor for the British Journal of Nursing, a member of the Council of Deans of Health, and contribute to NHS England South East working groups. I also sit on several editorial boards, act as a peer reviewer for international journals, and hold external examiner roles for universities in the UK. My publications include peer reviewed journal articles, book chapters, and authored educational textbooks, including a widely adopted series for advanced practitioners. Through this work, I remain committed to impactful, inclusive, and internationally relevant leadership in nursing education.

Professor Barry Hill’s research interests focus on lived experience, with particular emphasis on hermeneutic phenomenology and the work of Max van Manen, especially theories of identity and professional socialisation. This perspective underpinned his PhD work. His wider scholarly interests include clinical education, critical care, advanced clinical practice, and respiratory and neurological nursing. Barry is an experienced education professional who works across education, research, and leadership at all levels within higher education. He has published extensively, including books, book chapters, and peer reviewed academic journal articles.
