Personal profile


Basil is a professor of finance at the Department of Accounting and Financial Management. He joined the University of Northumbria in 2021 and before that he worked in different institutions including University of Huddersfield where he was as a professor of Accounting and Finance and the subject group leader for the Accounting and Finance group (from 2017-2019);  Birkbeck College, University of London where he was the chair of the Accounting and Financial Management subject group and the director of Accounting and finance postgraduate programmes for the period from 2012-2017; and  Middlesex University at the Accounting and Finance Department where he was a Senior Lecturer in Finance for the period from 2008-2012.

Basil's background is corporate finance in the fields of capital structure, dividend policy, and cash holdings as well as corporate governance implications in corporate finance and accounting. His research appears in different journals such as British Journal of Management; International Journal of Finance and Economics; Journal of International Accounting, Auditing and Taxation; Tourism Management; Journal of Small Business Management; International Business Review; Busines strategy and the Environment; among others.  

Basil also has interests in curriculum development. At Birkbeck College, University of London, Basil developed and redesigned the MSc Investment Management and the MSc Accounting and Financial Management and created different modules at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels in the institutions he worked at.  

During his career, Basil has taught various finance modules at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. He has a special interest in teaching Corporate Finance, International Finance, Financial Modelling and Contemporary Issues in Accounting and Finance, where he uses his research to inform his teaching.
