Bethany Wyatt

I am a cultural historian of modern Britain. My PhD project at Northumbria University is provisionally titled ‘Cultures of Care in Britain’s Country House Hospitals, 1914-1919’. Following the completion of my BA in Modern History at the University of East Anglia in 2012, I worked in the journalism and heritage sectors, before returning to higher education in 2018. I graduated from my MA in Historical Research, which I studied at Birkbeck, University of London while still working in heritage, in 2020. I began my PhD at Northumbria in October 2022.

I specialise in the cultural history of the First World War in Britain. My research has been influenced by approaches including emotions, gender, the environmental humanities, and the medical humanities. I am more broadly interested in social and cultural histories of Britain from the eighteenth century to the early twentieth century, including country houses, and (re)imaginings in film and television period drama.
