Biography

Callum Thomson joined Northumbria University in November 2018 as a Solicitor Tutor within the award-winning Student Law Office.  The law clinic offers advice and assistance to members of the public and he supervises students working on family law and private client cases.

Callum read for his degree at Northumbria University Law School and graduated from the MLaw (Exempting) course in June 2014.  He worked in private practice for four years, qualifying as a solicitor of the senior courts of England and Wales in March 2017.  Callum’s current research interests involve the law relating to children in family justice, domestic abuse and clinical legal education.

Since starting at Northumbria, he has taught Wills and Probate, Solicitors' Accounts, Interviewing and Legal Writing, Approaches to Law and Lawyering Skills, Street Law and Key Skills for Employability. Callum has taught students in all years of the four-year programme, including Masters and Legal Practice Course students. Furthermore, he has commenced a Personal Tutor coaching role for students on the Solicitor Higher Apprenticeship Programme, as well as providing guidance to students completing their dissertations.

Research interests

Callum Thomson has published and presented his research into the area of domestic abuse.  His co-authored article, ‘Stay Home, Stay Safe, Save Lives?  An analysis of the impact of COVID-19 on the ability of victims of Gender Based Violence to access justice’, published in The Journal of Criminal, was successfully received.  The findings were submitted to the Home Affairs Committee and were presented to the Local Family Justice Board.  Callum, as a member of a panel of speakers with the Domestic Abuse Commissioner for England and Wales, presented the research to the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy for their seminar focused on the elimination of violence against women.

Callum also publishes and presents his research into clinical legal education.  His research has considered the readiness of students to undertake work in law clinics, as well as an analysis of the Law in the Community module at Northumbria University.  Furthermore, Callum has published in The Law Teacher, wherein his research considered colleagues’ reflections on teaching and assessing reflection in the law clinic.

Callum is studying for his doctorate in law.  The research focuses on voice and agency of the child in court proceedings, including the child’s mental health and issues of parental alienation and its interplay with domestic abuse.
