Claire Sutherland has a long-standing interest in nationalism and nation-building - understood as how states construct nationhood to maintain their legitimacy - and museum representations of the nation in selected Southeast Asian and European cases. Claire has published widely on aspects of nationalist ideology and its relationship with cosmopolitanism, citizenship and migration, among others. Claire’s current interests include theorising beyond the nation through a maritime lens, and looking at how structural racism and colonial legacies connect with nationalism.
Claire is a professor of politics in the department of social sciences and was previously Head of Teaching Excellence for the University (2019-20).
Claire previously worked at Bath, Manchester and most recently Durham University, where she was Deputy Head of the School of Government and International Affairs (2017-19), Acting Dean for Equality and Diversity (2016-17) and Deputy Head of Faculty for Undergraduates in Social Sciences and Health (2012-15). Claire has significant experience in supporting the development of University Education Strategy, curriculum development and quality assurance processes.
