Biography

Darryl joined the Department of Social Sciences as a full-time member of staff in September 2013. His research and teaching seeks to explore the development of NGOs and civil society organisations in India and the UK and to rethink the nature of social research methods in practice. 

He contributes to postgraduate and undergraduate teaching in applied social research methods and international development as well as creating bespoke research methods focused CPD for public, community and voluntary sector organisations.

In recent years Darryl has held senior roles within the department including Director of Education and Deputy Head of Department. In 2016 Darryl was awarded a Senior Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy and in 2020 a European Commission Marie Sklodowska-Curie Fellowship.

 

Research interests

Darryl is a member of the Centre for International Development. He is an interdisciplinary scholar with research interests in NGOs (including how they learn, construct work and change over time); how transformative encounters shape people’s understanding of development and the ‘other’; ethnography and visual research methods, and the application of social research methods in practice settings. Darryl draws on an extensive track record of working with higher education and civil society organisations in the UK and India as a researcher, trustee, advisor and employee. Darryl’s approach to research is based on co-production, capacity building and participatory approaches to enabling organisational (and wider social) change.
