Personal profile

Biography

I graduated with BA (Hons) in Sociology from the University of Sheffield where my research interests were in the (complex) relationship between language and social disadvantage. Following my BA graduation I gained a Trinity (Cambridge) Cert. TESOL and spent several years teaching as an ESOL/EFL tutor at a variety of institutions in Britain, Europe and the Far East. In 2004 I was awarded an MA (with distinction) in Applied Linguistics from the University of Sheffield. In 2009 I was awarded a PhD in Linguistics, again from the University of Sheffield. I joined Northumbria in 2010. My research interests include cognitive grammar, usage-based approaches to L1 & L2 acquisition and processing, and individual education and literacy-related differences in linguistic knowledge.
