Personal profile

Research interests

Kevin Dixon is a social scientist specialising in the sociology of sport, exercise, leisure, and health. He was awarded his PhD ‘A sociological investigation into football fandom as consumption in the age of liquid modernity’ from Staffordshire University in 2011 and from this he published his first monograph ‘Consuming Football in Late Modern Life’ (Routledge, 2013, re-released in paperback, 2019). His latest monograph (with Ellis Cashmore and Jamie Cleland), Screen Society (Routledge, 2018) ventures outside of the realm of sport, eliciting the thoughts and opinions of 2000 participants to draw together insights into today's digital society as seen by the users of smartphones, tablets, and computers. This book, which includes an analysis of digital health, challenges accepted wisdom on many of the so-called problems associated with screen use. Kevin has also co-edited (with Tom Gibbons) ‘The Impact of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games: Diminishing contrasts increasing varieties’ as well as another co-edited text with Ellis Cashmore entitled ‘Studying Football’ (Routledge, 2016). His latest book (with Jamie Cleland and Daniel Kilvington) ‘Online Research Methods in Sports Studies' (Routledge, 2020) is designed to be used as a resource for students and researchers, as well as an aid for lecturers who teach on sport related courses. Kevin has also published in a range of international peer reviewed journals and has chapters in many edited books on social issues relative to sport, exercise, leisure, and health. Dr Dixon welcomes applications from PhD candidates.
