Biography

Lyndsey Bengtsson is an Associate Professor in Law at Northumbria University. As Module Leader for Law in the Community, she coordinates partnerships with Citizens Advice Newcastle and Gateshead, enabling students to provide legal support to the community while developing practical skills. She also supervises students in the Student Law Office, where they advise and represent members of the public on employment law matters, and in the Policy/Law Reform Clinic, where students conduct research aimed at influencing law reform and policy change.

Teaching and Academic Leadership

Lyndsey has held various leadership roles, including LPC Programme Leader, and teaches across undergraduate and postgraduate law programmes, including Employment Law and modules on the M Law and LLB programmes. She is a widely recognised leader of educational innovation at Northumbria, preparing students for the realities of legal practice through clinical legal education. 

Research

Lyndsey's research focuses on workplace equality, particularly age discrimination, dementia in employment, and menopause discrimination. She is part of the management team for the ESRC-funded Working with Dementia Network, a transdisciplinary collaboration examining employment rights, with the aim of informing workplace policies and supporting those affected by dementia.

Editorial and Professional Service

Lyndsey is the Managing Editor of the International Journal of Clinical Legal Education and sits on the editorial board of the Journal of Legal Research Methodology. She reviews for the International Journal of Law and Management and the International Journal of Discrimination and the Law. She is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and previously served as Trustee and Treasurer for the Clinical Legal Education Organisation.

Professional Background

A qualified Solicitor (non practising), Lyndsey graduated from Northumbria University with First Class Honours in the LLB (Hons) Exempting Course and obtained a Distinction in her LLM in Commercial Law. She trained at Samuel Phillips Law Firm in Newcastle, qualifying into their Employment Law Department in 2007, and then spent eight years as an Assistant Force Solicitor at Northumbria Police Legal Department, advising on employment law matters. This practice experience informs her teaching and research.

Research interests

Lyndsey's research focuses on advancing equality in the workplace, with particular interest in ageism, dementia, and menopause. She was awarded her PhD in 2016 with her thesis entitled ‘Age Stereotyping in the Workplace: A Critical Analysis of the Employment Tribunals’ Approach’. She has published research which considers ageism against older workers in the workplace and the approach of the UK courts and tribunals. She has also published research into how the CJEU has approached age stereotyping and the influence the CJEU has had on the UK. Her work is multi-disciplinary and is open to collaboration with those working in other fields which consider equality. 

Lyndsey is also interested in all aspects of clinical legal education, including reflection and policy/law reform clinics. She publishes widely in this area and speaks at worldwide conferences to disseminate her research.
