Personal profile


Mary is a Senior Lecturer in Criminology and joined the Department of Social Sciences in September 2010.

Prior to this she completed both an undergraduate and MA degree at Manchester University in human geography, a PhD in human geography at Loughborough University, and a post-doc funded by a Commonwealth Scholarship in the School of Criminology at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, Canada.

Research interests

Mary's research interests centre on the regulation and criminalization of sex and sexualities, with a specific focus on the sex industry. She has completed research projects independently and in collaboration with sex workers, third-sector organisations and academics. Some of the areas explored through these collaborations are sex work policy, the experiences of male female and trans sex workers, the role of platforms and technologies in shaping the sex industry and the experiences of academics researching sex work. Mary is a trustee of National Ugly Mugs (NUM), a national award-winning sex worker safety organisation.
