Biography

I joined the university as a Senior Lecturer in Mathematics in 1990 and after 10 years, was promoted to Principal Lecturer and became Head of the Mathematics Subject Area. I enjoyed that role for three years before leaving to go on secondment on a government funded project. The project was called the New Technology Institute and looked to use Further and Higher Education institutions to improve technology training in businesses. I was Project Director for institutions in the north-east of England and I held this role for four years until I returned to Northumbria University where I became Director of Enterprise in the School of Engineering and Mathematics. In subsequent years, the mathematics subject area was part of several different Academic Schools or Departments and I held various roles including Director of Collaborative Ventures, Director of Programmes and Deputy Head of Department for varying lengths of time.

Research interests

I joined the university as a Senior Lecturer in 1990 after completing a Mathematics degree, a PhD in Statistics and a post-doctoral Fellowship at Newcastle University. My postgraduate research work was in survival data analysis with particular application to the analysis of kidney transplant data and the use of frailty in survival models. Over the years, I developed an interest in wavelets, fuzzy logic and data science and have recently returned to studying the use of frailty in survival models. Other current areas I am involved with are the  study of Dry Eye disease, computer algorithms used to control robot swarms and I am also part of a team bidding for KTP funding to develop an Automatic Valuation Model for Commercial Property.
