Dr. Peter D. Wagner, part time Professor at Northumbria University, is a world authority in respiratory and exercise physiology/pathophysiology with vast experience in teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate level.  He has served as the Head of the Division of Physiology at the Department of Medicine of the University California San Diego (UCSD) for 13 consecutive years and as the Interim Chief of the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at UCSD for 5 years.

Dr. Wagner has served as the President of the American Thoracic Society (2005-2006) and the President of the American Physiological Society (2010-2011). For six consecutive years, he was the Editor in Chief of the Journal of Applied Physiology, and currently serves as Chairperson of an NIH Study Section for training grants in cardio-respiratory physiology and disease. Moreover, Dr. Wagner has served as a consultant to several organizations including the MRC of Canada, the MRC of New Zealand, the National Science Foundation, the National Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada and the Israel Science Foundation. He has been serving as a consultant to NIH since 1981 at various positions including the NIH Centre for Scientific Review, and the NIH Strategic Planning Executive Committee.
