Her PhD is in the Policing of Honour Based Abuse; Her Masters was in the Policing of Rogue Trader and Distraction Burglary - both focus on police culture(s) and discretionary practices. Research methods: Qualitative, documentary analysis, focus groups, semi structured interviews. She is interested in tutoring Masters/PhD students in the following areas: Police culture(s) and discretionary practices (in any area); Partnership working between police and other agencies; Policing the arenas of Honour Based Abuse; Forced Marriage; child protection; domestic abuse; CSE; female perpetration; rape (including male rape) Crimes against the elderly such as Rogue Trader and Distraction burglary Child Sexual Exploitation Child Sexual Abuse Police Crime Recording

Rachael’s current research centres on the Policing of Honour-Based Abuse crime in the UK.  Her specialisms are policing, police organisational culture, honour-based abuse and domestic abuse. She has been involved in curriculum design and delivery both in industry and academic environments, organising and delivering joint agency training to improve operational practices across the public sector. Rachael joined Greater Manchester Police as a constable in 1994 and has operational experience in investigating and managing serious complex crime. She became a detective in 1999 working across numerous specialisms including CID, Force Intelligence; Major Incident Team (specifically gang shootings and domestic murders); child protection and domestic abuse. She worked as a crime trainer (2004-2007) teaching advanced suspect interview skills, CID training and NCRS crime evaluation. She effected business process reengineering to GMP, specifically managing organisational change to prisoner processing units, intelligence hubs (2010-2012) and child video interview suites. She was employed as a domestic abuse sergeant in public protection prior to pursuing her PhD which she completed in 2018.

In 2017 Rachael appeared on BBC Radio 4 Women's hour with host Jane Garvey to discuss her article findings on female perpetration. The same year she appeared on ITV Calendar News to discuss the same topic, along with colleague and activist CBE Jasvinder Sanghera (Karma Nirvana). She has conducted several media broadcasts and newspaper articles on police culture, Forced Marriage and the Policing Honour Based Abuse. In 2019 she published her book entitled 'Policing UK Honour Based Abuse Crime' with Palgrave Macmillan. Her recent research articles (2021) have focused on the policing response to elderly victims of distraction burglary/Rogue Trader, an area she researched for her MBA.

Research interests

Rachael’s research specifically focuses on police culture(s) and discretionary practices and how these impact on police criminal investigations. Her PhD research analyses this in respect of Policing UK Honour Based Abuse Crime and Forced Marriage.

Her previous Masters research critically assessed police practices in the context of Distraction Burglary and Rogue Trader crime in England and Wales; which mainly impacts on elderly victims of crime.

As a previous police Domestic Abuse lead she is also facinated by other areas of victimology, specifically concerning how these crimes are policed, notably:
