Research interests

Sarah Cohen’s research focuses on ideology, examining public opinion and political parties and understanding how core values affect this relationship. Her recent paper in the British Journal of Political Science examines ideological change in Britain over the last four decades. Her current research seeks to further explore the role of values and identity in polarizing behaviour. Sarah also has a long standing interest in environmental politics which includes examining the relationship between environmental and economic policy goals and actions. 


Dr Sarah Cohen is a senior lecturer in Social Sciences and part of the International Relations & Politics programme team. Sarah completed her undergraduate degree in Economics (BA Hons 2.i) at the University of Liverpool, and then started a career as a Chartered Accountant, training with Ernst & Young. Sarah later returned to the University of York and completed an MA Public Administration and Public Policy (with distinction). Followed by completing her PhD at the University of Sheffield in 2008, which focused on environmental policy. Since working at Northumbria University Sarah has led and taught on both undergraduate and masters level programmes. Recently Sarah's research interests have developed further to explore ideology, public opinion and political parties, primarily in the UK.
