Biography
Dr Shaun Shen (publishing as Xiang Shen) is a skilled and experienced Senior Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering, specialising in applied aerodynamics. With over a decade of expertise in the field, he is a specialist in experimental fluid dynamics, flow control and visualisation, numerical simulations, aerodynamic and thermal design, and multidisciplinary optimisation. As the academic lead of Northumbria University Aerodynamics Laboratory (NUAL, www.northumbria.ac.uk/windtunnel), he drives innovative research projects and nurtures the next generation of engineers.
Shaun obtained his PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Queen Mary University of London, UK, and then undertook postdoctoral research on aerodynamics and thermal management at Newcastle University in Professor Barrie Mecrow's group. He also served as a visiting scholar at Tohoku University in Japan from 2008 to 2009.
Shaun has led and participated in various aerodynamics-related research projects, including the Royal Society project "Research on the mechanisms of dynamic stall of wind turbine blades equipped with vortex generators," the NERC cross-disciplinary research project "Bio-Inspired Wind Turbine Blade Design: What can we learn from humpback whale flippers?," the Northern Accelerator Project "Wind-tunnel aided design for customised solutions of vortex generators on wind turbine blades," the EPSRC project "UK Turbulence Consortium," and the China State Program "Fundamental Research on Aerodynamics of Large-Scale Wind Turbine," among others. He is also a respected reviewer for over ten academic journals, such as Physics of Fluids, Flow Measurement and Instrumentation, and The Aeronautical Journal.
With his knowledge and expertise in aerodynamics and mechanical engineering, Shaun is committed to sharing his insights with others and shaping the future of the field.
