The aim of this PhD thesis is to systematically investigate the effects of linseed oil, the most representative oil medium used in oil colours and traditional oil-based inks in typography and printmaking over the centuries, on the paper supports of archival material, books and works of art.

The research focuses on the changes in optical, chemical and mechanical properties, and morphology that occur in the system paper-linseed oil upon ageing. The methodology of study includes artificial accelerated ageing of mock-ups, colorimetry (CIE Lab), spectrometric techniques (SEM-EDAX, FTIR, measurement of diffuse reflectance and opacity), peroxide value, tensile resistance testing, analysis of volatile organic compounds (VOC) with gas chromatography combined with mass spectroscopy (GC-MS), and statistical analysis of the results.

The first chapters include literature review on the linseed oil formulations and paper types used for oil painting, printmaking and typography. Additionally, the damages recorded on the pap
