Abstract

Council on Biblical Manhood and Womanhood (CBMW)

In the 1980s, various theological debates arose within conservative evangelicalism regarding the role of women in the church and family. The Council on Biblical Manhood and Womanhood (CBMW) is a conservative evangelical Christian organisation founded in 1987. CBMW is committed to promoting a complementarian understanding of gender roles within a Christian context. To this end, it convened a group of theologians and scholars to formulate the Danvers Statement. The Danvers Statement was developed in 1987, emerging during a period of theological reflection and debate within conservative evangelical circles. This era witnessed growing tensions between complementarian and egalitarian perspectives on gender roles in the church and society. CBMW sought to address these theological discussions and provide a comprehensive statement outlining the complementarian position. Complementarianism is the theological stance advocated by CBMW, which holds that men and women are equal in value and worth but have distinct, complementary roles in various aspects of life, particularly in marriage and church leadership.
The Statement on Men, Women, and Biblical Equality reflects a perspective within Christianity that advocates for the equal treatment of men and women in all aspects of life, including within the church and family. This viewpoint often challenges traditional gender roles and seeks to promote a more inclusive and egalitarian understanding of male-female relationships. Supporters of the "Men, Women, and Biblical Equality" perspective advocate that Scripture supports the inherent value and equal status of both sexes. The statement reflects a commitment to challenging traditional gender norms and creating an environment where both men and women can contribute their gifts and talents within their faith context. Egalitarianism advocates another theological viewpoint, which holds that men and women enjoy equal value, worth, and opportunities in all aspects of life, including marriage, family, and church leadership.
