In the 1980s, various theological debates arose within conservative evangelicalism regarding the role of women in the church and family. The Council on Biblical Manhood and Womanhood (CBMW) is a conservative evangelical Christian organisation founded in 1987. CBMW is committed to promoting a complementarian understanding of gender roles within a Christian context. To this end, it convened a group of theologians and scholars to formulate the Danvers Statement. The Danvers Statement was developed in 1987, emerging during a period of theological reflection and debate within conservative evangelical circles. This era witnessed growing tensions between complementarian and egalitarian perspectives on gender roles in the church and society.
