Abstract
With a commitment to foster innovation and economic growth, universities in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) have adopted the university-industry collaboration (UIC) policies and practices of North America and Europe, without contextualizing these perspective frameworks. This has led to UIC in SSA remaining weak, limited, and lacking in formality. Drawing on organizational justice theory and semi-structured interviews with 36 faculty members, this paper identifies information asymmetry, organizational inefficiency, and organizational mistrust within universities in SSA, which affects the motives, channels, and outcomes of UIC. The paper argues that the relational and organizational context of universities are key to advancing UIC in SSA.
