Abstract
Nurses report receiving insufficient training in caring for people with a learning disability, and this group experiences health inequalities and unmet needs. Student learning disability nurses, academics and people with a learning disability worked collaboratively to develop a training resource that describes how to support someone with a learning disability. The key themes identified were: getting to know the individual, overcoming fears, communication, reasonable adjustments and involving families and carers. Participants reported feeling empowered after the project, and it highlighted the need for people with a learning disability to be included in nurse training.
