Air quality modelling of a park and ride scheme in Leicester, UK

Abstract

The results of an air quality modeling study carried out within the HEAVEN (Healthier Environment through Abatement of Vehicle Emission and Noise) EU: Fifth Framework Information Society Programme are presented. The HEAVEN system in Leicester has identified potential scenarios to improve air quality through appropriate control and management of traffic. Leicester City Council and Leicestershire County Council identified the potential for the installation of five peripheral Park and Ride sites as a means to manage traffic demand to reduce congestion and to ensure that the pollutant concentrations in the Air Quality Management Area would meet the National Air Quality Objectives by 2005, thus honoring their commitment to the UK Government. Despite an assumed 4.5% growth in traffic, the Park and Ride scheme would result in a reduction in vehicular flow sufficient to improve air quality in the city center.
