    Abstract

The extraction of wave energy in coastal regions may be considered as a viable alternative due to the non-ending rise in global demand for renewable energy. The viability of this extraction is determined by assessing the wave energy potential that is mildly explored in Mauritius. As a result, this research demonstrates the evaluation and characterisation of wave energy in the south of Mauritius. The potential for energy generation was assessed based on hourly data from a polynomial fit for the period of June 2016 to May 2017. The results were validated with buoy measurements and the numerical hindcast data was calculated by wave energy and power. It was found that the monthly averaged wave power varies between 8.66 kW/m and 42.9 kW/m. A polynomial equation, depending on significant wave height, was derived and its validity was tested against existing studies.
