Abstract

The history of technicians is a history of people; the men and women whose technical expertise and specialist skills are woven into the fabric of scientific research without their names being picked out in its history. This chapter examines the history of technicians from the 17th century to the 20th century, considering themes of status and recognition. It highlights the gradual improvement in occupational status for some technicians, albeit amidst persisting issues of social recognition.
