Abstract
This special issue includes an introduction (by the editors, Charlotte Alston and Daniel Laqua) and five research articles (by Richard Millington, James Koranyi, Aleksandra Gajowy, Kim Christiaens / Manuel Herrera Crespo, and Charlotte Alston). Taken together, these contributions explore the ambiguous ways in which opposition to state socialism has been labelled and remembered. They also trace various divisions within activist movements that challenged communist rule. The journal issue focuses on different levels of inquiry, from local approaches and everyday life, to national settings (specifically the GDR, Poland, and Romania) and transnational processes and connections (both within and beyond the Eastern bloc).
