CBT-I Applied to Acute Insomnia

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapterpeer-review

Abstract

Whilst CBT-I is considered the optimal treatment for insomnia disorder, there is limited research in terms of its prophylactic properties. This chapter examines the use of a brief variant of CBT-I in the context of acute insomnia. Starting with the definition of acute insomnia, the chapter moves on to outline the only non-pharmacological strategy aimed to circumvent the transition from acute to chronic insomnia (i.e., the ‘one-shot) and show how it can be used in practice. The results from the trials of the ‘one-shot’ demonstrate its use in acute insomnia and the potential for its utility in more complex situations and environments.
