Abstract
In this chapter, the authors, Marco Mason and Vince Dziekan, propose that museums must develop new competencies and adopt design practices in order to navigate digital transformation effectively. Digital change extends beyond technology adoption, requiring integration into all aspects of museum operations supported by a long-term commitment to developing digital literacies. This chapter explores how museums are shifting from object-centric to visitor-centred institutions, leveraging digital tools to enhance engagement and inclusivity while striving for digital sustainability grounded by human-centred understanding. Design thinking provides a strategic approach to addressing the increasing complexity museums face due to social, cultural and technological pressures. AI and digital ecosystems are reshaping museum operations, thereby calling for open innovation and greater interdisciplinary collaboration between cultural organisations, research centers, and creative industries to enhance their adaptability towards change. By embedding design into organisational culture, museums are evolving into dynamic, responsive institutions that prioritise people-centered experiences, knowledge-sharing and community connection to ensure they remain relevant and accessible. This chapter notices a shift that positions museums as sites of participation, cultural citizenship, and inclusive collaboration, whereby design practices foster resilience in an era of continuous digital and societal transformation.
