Abstract

Mobile telecommunications is a global success story, generating significant revenues and economic activity. Through focusing on Africa and Latin America, this chapter explores the structural changes that have occurred and the new services that mobile operators have launched. The chapter also highlights the changing geographical footprint of operators, with particular attention being paid to Millicom which has exited Africa and expanded across Latin America. The contribution of mobile financial services to operator competitiveness is questioned.
