N2 - In this study we aimed to explore the experiences of parents on the NICU, identifying barriers to Family Integrated Care and developing interventions to support families transitioning from the neonatal unit to home.An adapted Experience-based Co-design (EBCD) approach was followed (Robert 2013), supplemented with in-depth parent interviews. Prototypical intervention components were defined, developed, and later piloted in-situ, live on the NICU. We report the development process, intervention components and share early insights from the pilot.Communication Cards act as permission-giving tokens to encourage families to ask the questions they need to ask (but are reluctant to, for a range of reasons). Parents were extremely positive about them in the pilot, whilst staff have mixed opinions and seemed less-sure of what value they added. The themes the cards aim to provoke action around are: parental mental health; new parent/infant activity (washing/changing/skin-to-skin); seeking improvement; what matters - to build parental confidence; questions you need to ask us; access to peer-supporters and parent groups. This is one of four artefacts that form part of a prospective REF Portfolio.• ‘Importance of Family’ set of 14 NICU Posters.• ‘Communication Cards’ set of 6 wipeable cards with pen and pouch.• ‘Going Home Tips’ pocket book of tips given at discharge, addressing the common hitches thathappen at home.• ‘Mobile-friendly Home Tips’ mobile-friendly navigable interactive pdf edition of the Home Tips Pocketbook.
