N2 - The starting point for this book was an appreciation that city centres around the
world are being subjected to change, arguably more rapid, more substantial, and
more sustained than ever in the past. The intention has been to understand the
nature of this change and how its impact is being managed, and in turn to consider what the future of the city centre may be like. In this concluding chapter, the evidence and lessons learnt from the preceding chapters offer insights, highlighting the worldwide significance of city centres in an increasingly urban world. First, through the lens of a global perspective, the four case study cities are reprised. Second, there is a reflection on the key points made by the various contributors to the book on how city centres are being reshaped and how to ensure that these centres continue to have a pivotal role in the way people live their lives. Third, there is an evaluation of the likely future shape and character of city centres, exploring the key issues of what and who centres are for. Finally, there are some thoughts about the future agenda for city centres, with the issues and debates that may be encountered.
