Abstract

DC-AC inverters play an important role in energy conversion for renewable energy systems such as wind energy systems and solar power systems. In terms of types of supply, DC-AC inverters are categorized as voltage-source inverters and current-source inverters. For DC-AC voltage-source inverters, the operating principles of single-phase half-bridge inverters, single-phase full-bridge inverters, three-phase inverters, multistepped inverters, and sinusoidal PWM inverters are reviewed in detail. The harmonics of the outputs are discussed and the performance index such as modulation index and ratio are introduced. Moreover, the operation principles of the current-source inverters including both single-phase and three-phase inverters are illustrated. The scenarios for the inverters respectively with resistive loads and RL (resistive and inductive) loads are both discussed.
