Abstract

In this chapter, the author reviews the current debates within the context of how physical education is defined, taking into account those who influence its content and delivery. Within this, Julia considers the purpose of physical education both as a discrete subject and within a broader curriculum context. Central to the debate, questions are raised and discussed in relation to what is meant by physical education; why it should be taught; what content should be included; how physical education should be taught and by whom.
