Abstract
Scott’s comprehensive essay, which prefaces Section One, is the first detailed treatment in English or French, of Gascoyne’s lifelong engagement with the work of his friend and mentor, Jouve. Here, Scott seeks to emphasise that their meeting in 1938 marked a significant turning-point for Gascoyne and was crucial to the development of his own poetry and philosophy. He began translating Jouve’s poems towards the end of the 1930’s, when Blanche Reverchon-Jouve became his analyst. Previously published and uncollected translations are included in Section One together with a significant number of Scott’s transcriptions of drafts and worksheets retrieved from different notebooks. Section Two assembles Gascoyne’s translations of important essays by Jouve and Bernard Groethuysen. Appendix A comprises three articles on Jouve by Gascoyne, drafts of published and unpublished poems and relevant letters in English and French. Appendix B includes facsimiles of the letters and handwritten draft translations
