Abstract
Research on this topic by Young builds on earlier work featured in RAE 2001 concerning the relationship of theory and practice to support the work of designers. Young’s other related research publications on this topic include: Developing an Integrated Model of Designing to Aid Understanding of the Complexity Paradigm in Design Practice, In: International Conference on Complexity Science, Embracing Complexity in Design, Paris, November 2005. A further development of this paper is to be published in the Futures Journal, published by Elsevier in the June 2008 in a special issue on complexity design issues. Young has been involved in the Embracing Complexity in Design project, which is part of the Designing for the 21st Century programme since its inception and has presented at several of its workshops and seminars. Presentations on this research have been delivered by Young as follows: Towards an Integrated Relational Model of Designing to Aid Understanding of Complexity in Design Practice, Embracing Complexity in Design, Designing Design Research 5, RCA, London, 17 December 2005 and the Creative Clusters Conference, Sage Gateshead, 2006. Young was invited by the Knowledge Group of the Design Council to present his thinking on relational models of design content, process and context to its staff in September 2007. This thinking is also the basis of development of the Intersections Conference: Design know-how for a new era, October 2007, in association with the Design Council and Dott07. The conference marked the end of the Dott 07 festival in the NE of England. Supervised by Young, PhD student Singleton researches emerging design methods and service design.
