Abstract

Despite the complex nature of the conceivable involved in the development of microstructures, there is need for a guidelines and critical understanding of microstructures by which it will be possible to develop protective coating and/ or materials that could resist corrosion even in any aggressive media. However, there are several treatments in the industry among which include descaling of acid, pickling and metal finishing. These processes made mild steel to be susceptible to corrosion due to their low resistance in the aggressive environment especially in the presence of hydrochloric acid. Additionally, the mild steel corrosion is accelerated in a chloride environment which usually result to pitting corrosion. Thus, resulting in huge economic loss as well as environmental pollution. To this end, the study discussed the effect of microstructural variables on the development of corrosion protection for mild steel. Also, the efficiency of corrosion inhibitors as well as the corrosion technology required for a specific environment was discussed. The outcome of the review showed that environment, microstructures and composition of metals and alloys as well as the parameters for coating play an essential role in developing corrosion protection layers with adequate mechanical and chemical properties. Consequently, the study provided a potential information for addressing the nitty gritty in the development of appropriate corrosion protection layers for mild steel.
