Abstract
This contribution describes the effect of various slaking methods on the microstructural and mineralogical characteristics of Portlandite crystals (Ca(OH)2). Aim of this research is to develop lime-based construction materials for the modern construction industry. Microstructural changes of Ca(OH)2 crystals obtained by slaking calcium oxide in different conditions were investigated using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and X-ray Diffraction Analysis (XRD). Results suggest that the slaking conditions affect the crystal size and shape resulting in an increase of surface area and, in turn, a potential improvement of mortars performances.
