Abstract

The chapter outlines energy efficiency and saving approaches currently used in buildings and construction practices. Energy efficiencies in building applications can be improved via a combination of active strategies and passive strategies. Active strategies include the adoption of advanced technologies for enhanced energy supply and efficiency, while passive strategies examine mechanisms in building design and orientation as well as building envelope to lower the overall energy demand for heating and cooling. It is important to note that an energy efficient building design should not only increase energy efficiency from the supply side but also reduce energy requirements and consumption on the demand side to facilitate the transition to sustainable energy practices.
